Luce joins the city of Valladolid’s climate change adhesion agreement
Our city, Valladolid, has been selected by the European Commission as one of the “100 climate neutral cities in Europe by 2030”. This is known as Mission 2030, and its inclusion in is part of the “Smart and Climate Neutral Cities 2030 Mission” of the Horizon Europe programme, the European Union’s largest Innovation programme, which will facilitate access to advanced funds and programmes.
The Innovation and Economic Development Agency of Valladolid (IdeVa), under the direction of the Mayor’s Office, is coordinating this ambitious project which Luce IT wanted to be part of because of our corporate social responsibility towards people and the environment.
What are EU missions?
Inspired in part by the Apollo 11 mission to put a man on the moon, EU missions are a commitment to solve major societal challenges such as: fighting cancer; adapting to climate change; greening cities; soil health to ensure healthy food, people, nature and climate; protecting our oceans.
Each EU mission has its own timetable and budget, depending on the difficulty of the challenge at hand. The missions will go beyond research and innovation, and stimulate innovation in all sectors to deliver effective solutions. In addition, the missions will play a crucial role in achieving EU priorities, such as the European Green Pact and the European Action Plan to Combat Cancer.
Valladolid Mission
Valladolid plays a key role in Europe’s decarbonisation agenda, being part of Horizon Europe’s group of 100 Smart and Climate Neutral Cities for 2030, which intensifies and accelerates its climate efforts.
There are seven Spanish cities: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Vitoria and Zaragoza, Valladolid which share this ambitious mission for climate neutrality with cities such as Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes, Munich, Manheim, Dublin, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Warsaw, Rome, Milan, Lisbon… Some examples of the 100 cities (along with 12 others, outside the EU), which are working on their firm commitment to the balanced, green and smart growth of their cities.
Valladolid has made a qualitative leap by being at the height of a Climate Mission that the EU compares to the Apollo Mission that reached the moon by pursuing such an ambitious goal: to achieve a zero-emission continent by 2050, as foreseen in the Green Pact.
Valladolid’s commitment to decarbonisation, aiming to become a zero-emission city by 2030, is essential to achieve a healthier city and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. It is also leading this transition together with other Spanish cities through CitiES2030, all of which have been recognised with the Mission Label awarded by the European Commission for the development of their Climate Agreements.
In October 2023, Valladolid received the Mission Label together with 10 other cities, five of them Spanish, in Valencia, the European Green Capital, awarded by the European Commission. In addition, Valladolid City Council also participates in the “Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change”, another of the European Commission’s “Climate Change Adaptation Missions”.
