DATAGIA, Digitalisation of the agri-food supply chain in Castile and León

Innovation doesn’t always happen in closed laboratories or the financial centers of gleaming skyscrapers. Sometimes, the true technological revolution is sown, watered, and harvested in the fields. In Castile and León, this transformation has a name: DATAGIA, the Digital Agri-Food Platform that is redefining how we understand food production in our region.

This project, developed within the framework of the RETECH PAN initiative, is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Agricultural Technological Institute of Castile and León (ITACYL), Telefónica, and Luce IT. But what does digitizing the agri-food chain really mean, and why is it so vital for our future?

The challenge: Overcoming information silos

Historically, the agri-food sector has operated in isolation. Farmers, industries, and the administration managed their information in “silos,” making it difficult to have a global view of the value chain. The challenge was clear: How could we connect everything, from seed to table, to be more efficient and sustainable?

DATAGIA transforms traditional agriculture into precision agriculture. To achieve this, it is necessary to guarantee total traceability and, above all, to promote sustainability in the use of resources as valuable and scarce as water.

How does DATAGIA work? Technology at the service of the land

The platform is not simply a database; it is a connected ecosystem that uses the most cutting-edge technologies so that the field “speaks” and we can understand it. Here is how it works:

  • Monitoring with IoT and Satellites: Through sensors in the field and satellite technology, it is possible to know the state of the crops in real-time. Imagine knowing exactly how much moisture your soil has without having to travel to each plot.
  •

  • Artificial Intelligence to predict the future: The platform uses predictive models that analyze the collected data to optimize irrigation, detect pests early, and help forecast market costs. It is moving from reactive to proactive agriculture.
  •

  • Total traceability: Thanks to real-time data capture, transparency is guaranteed at every step. In addition, it has a specific App so that end consumers can verify the quality and origin of what they are buying.

The DATAGIA Market (Lonja). A secure market.

Digitalization not only improves production but also commercialization. The marketplace or “DATAGIA Market” facilitates the exchange of products and services in a secure digital environment. This not only reduces logistical costs but also promotes the circular economy, allowing resources to be utilized much more efficiently within the region itself.

Results: A more competitive and sustainable sector

As Mario González, Head of Information Technologies at ITACYL, points out, this initiative generates an “open digital ecosystem” where farmers, cooperatives, researchers, and administrations collaborate hand in hand. The benefits are tangible:

  • Data-driven decisions: No more “I think…”; actions are now taken based on real analytics.
  •

  • Greater operational efficiency: The performance of agri-food resources is substantially improved.
  •

  • Visibility of the value chain: The foundations are laid for a fluid exchange of information between all links in the sector.

DATAGIA is not just technology; it is Castile and León’s commitment to positioning itself as a global benchmark in agri-food innovation. It is proof that when technology and tradition meet, the result is a more prosperous and sustainable future for all.

At Luce IT, we are proud to be part of this digital transformation, contributing our experience to connect all players in the chain through Big Data and AI solutions that truly make a difference.
