RetechFOR Results: Innovation and Technology in the Service of Our Forests

The preservation of our natural environment and the efficient management of forest resources have never been as crucial as they are today. Climate change, rural abandonment, and the need for an ecological transition demand innovative and effective solutions. In this context, at Luce IT we are proud to announce the successful completion of our participation in the RetechFOR project, a pioneering initiative that has marked a turning point in the way we understand and protect our forests.

In this article, we want to tell you in a simple and approachable way what RetechFOR is, what its main goals have been, what role we have played at Luce IT, and what real impact it is already having on our environment.

What is RetechFOR?

RetechFOR is the acronym for REd TECnológica y territorial para el monitoreo forestal y reducción de desastres ambientales como palancas para el desarrollo de la Bioeconomía FORestal (Technological and territorial network for forest monitoring and environmental disaster reduction as levers for the development of the Forest Bioeconomy). In essence, it is a large collaborative network formed by two autonomous communities: Castile and León and the Canary Islands.

The purpose of this union is to advance the knowledge and management of forest resources to boost the bioeconomy (an economy based on renewable natural resources). At the same time, the project seeks to reduce the impacts of environmental disasters, with a special focus on forest fires, relying on the digital and ecological transition.

What were the main objectives of RetechFOR?

To achieve a real and lasting impact, the project was structured around several very clear strategic objectives:

  • Optimize coordination: Improve the way all agents (both public and private) continuously monitor the forest territory.
  • Improve prevention and response: Facilitate early warning and optimize decision-making so that the management and extinction of forest fires is much more effective and efficient.
  • Intelligent restoration: Establish appropriate forest restoration plans that help recover and improve the territory sustainably.
  • Rural economic boost: Promote the bioeconomy to revitalize local economies in rural environments, retaining talent and creating green and digital jobs.

What has been done in this project?

To materialize these objectives, RetechFOR has deployed a truly cutting-edge technological ecosystem. On a general level, the project has researched and demonstrated how to extract great value from data analysis (Data Analytics) obtained through sensors aboard aeronautical, satellite, and pseudo-satellite platforms.

This has involved the creation of advanced data spaces, the use of Artificial Intelligence to predict risks, and the implementation of digitalization systems in a sector—forestry—which has historically had a lower level of modernization compared to other industrial sectors.

Highlighting the work of Luce IT: Our technological contribution

At Luce IT, we are passionate about solving complex problems using the most advanced technology. Within the framework of RetechFOR, we have led the development of digital solutions that completely transform the daily lives of forestry technicians and the administration, always safeguarding the technical confidentiality of the architectures used.

Our main contributions have focused on two major developments:

  1. ForestGPT: Forestry knowledge at your fingertips Imagine a technician in the middle of the mountain who urgently needs to consult what type of species are recommended for a specific soil according to current regulations. Traditionally, this knowledge was scattered across hundreds of manuals and technical documents that were difficult to access quickly.

To solve this, at Luce IT we have developed ForestGPT, an intelligent assistant for forest management. Using advanced conversational Artificial Intelligence, this assistant allows technicians to make queries in natural language and obtain precise answers in a matter of seconds. The most innovative aspect is that the system does not invent information; it always bases its answers on citing the official source document, guaranteeing total technical consistency in decision-making.

  1. GISAF: Comprehensive Forest Health Management Pest and disease control in forests was often managed through disconnected spreadsheets, making it difficult to see “the big picture”.

At Luce IT, we have created GISAF, a modular web platform that digitizes the entire forest health cycle. This tool allows registering geolocated phytosanitary alerts directly on an interactive map (GIS technology), planning treatments, and managing inspections from a single place. Thanks to this centralization, coordination between technicians is much more agile and effective.

What have been the results of RetechFOR?

The results obtained after the implementation of these solutions have been highly positive and tangible:

  • Efficiency in the field and office: The time technicians invest in manual information searches and purely administrative tasks has been drastically reduced.
  • Faster and more consistent decisions: Thanks to having information centralized and accessible via AI, forest management decisions are more homogeneous and better founded on real data and regulations.
  • Agile ecosystem protection: The ability to detect, geolocate, and respond to pest outbreaks or alerts almost immediately helps preserve forest health in a much more proactive way.

Project Funding

The success of RetechFOR has been possible thanks to solid institutional and financial backing. In compliance with current communication regulations, we highlight that the actions of this project are executed under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).

This project is Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU. Likewise, it has received funding and support from the CDTI (Center for Technological Development and Innovation), an entity dependent on the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of the Government of Spain.

At Luce IT, we help you centralize, secure, and optimize all your information with our Data Platform, and transform the experience of your employees and customers by integrating advanced conversational assistants like LIA (Luce Intelligent Assistant). If you want to know more about how Luce IT can help you digitize your processes and harness the power of Artificial Intelligence, get in touch with us.

Frequently Asked Questions about RetechFOR

What does the acronym RetechFOR mean?
